If you work with horses that are meant for human consumption, we display an icon that indicates a distinct difference between horses purposed for recreational use and horses that are ready for human consumption, or slaughter horses as we are calling them. This article will explain how you can add a new patient and mark it as an animal for recreational use. Before you start
If you work with horses that are meant for human consumption, contact our Customer Support team to have the module for slaughter horses enabled.
Step-by-step instructions
- Search for the owner.
- In the tab Animals, click the New Patient button.
- On the following page, please select ‘horse’ in the species field and fill in the rest of the details.
- Click Save at the bottom of the page.
You will see a green icon in the patient panel on the left side:
The green horse icon indicates that this patient is being used for recreational purposes.

How do I change a horse from recreational use to slaughter?
- Click the Patient Data tab at the top right corner.
- Scroll down and click logbook to have it unfold.
- Change the “herd type” to horse.
- Click Save.
You will return to the patient file and will notice that the green horse icon has changed to the red horse icon in the patient panel on the left side:
Please note that if horses are meant for human consumption, you are required by law to keep a log of all the medication that these horses have been administered.
